The photo gallery/slide show of the M37S

We first encountered the "M" at the Toronto Auto Show a few months ago. This car caught our attention, the V8 version had our imagination fired up. Through a few scheduling challenges we finally have an opportunity with the V6 version.

Picking up the car our wisdom counseled us to wait till winter tires were installed, prior to driving away...good move.

Sometimes its tough being the big brother in the family. There is a lot of pressure to perform, excel, and represent the family.  This job becomes twice as hard when you have a smaller sibling that is an over achiever. Surely  this is how the M37s feels with its smaller sibling G37. In a market where most of the action is in the entry level luxury cars.

If you have forgotten what makes the smaller siblings so good, yes it was first used on the bigger brother, and eventually made it down to the little brother.  For 2011 the M get a fresh redesign with 2 new engine choices a 3.7L V6 and a 5.6L V8. From a design perspective the M looks more muscular, with an aggressive stance compared to the previous M45. Being Infinti’s halo car it is bristling with technology.

Our tester is the S version, which comes with an extensive list of features, from hard drive Navigation, Bose surround sound with 5.1 channel and 14 speakers including the seats, Bluetooth audio, active headlights, intelligent cruise control, a climate control system that imitates calming breezes, climate control front seats, blind spot monitors, lane departure monitor, the list goes on and on.

The interior is stunning, superbly finished, with supple leather, and Japanese Ash wood trim. Similar to the exterior styling, the interior has additional elegant flowing lines. The stitching on the seats, wood trim and door panels follow an "S” like pattern. There is not one straight line on this car, which is refreshing in a world where everyone wants to be like the Germans.

The seats are fully powered, very supportive, heated and cooled. The leather wrapped steering wheel also has a sport trim with a nice tactile feel, in addition to being power tilt and telescoping, and heated.  The navigation system is very intuitive, with a substantial screen. The sound system is amazing, and truly generates a surround sound with the speakers in the seats. Streaming music via Bluetooth is a nice feature, or there is the 9 gb hard drive.

Another aspect of the car that surprises, is the amount of convenience and safety features. Traction control, abs, stability control are standard on most cars today. The M also has Blind Spot Intervention, Lane Departure, Intelligent Brake Assist, with collision warning to name a few. The seatbelt tightens up if the car does not like how you’re driving.  Are we humans such a threat to ourselves on the road that we need features like this? A car that steers, brakes, and punishes you (tightens up seatbelts) when you decide to be distracted, or put yourself at risk. That such features are available is a good thing,  at times some of us forget how to drive, especially in the winter months.

The specifications, pricing and you can build your own "M"...here.

The car is exciting to drive, you can select several modes from although the normal or sport are our preferred modes. With the "eco" mode constantly reminding how to conserve fuel. This "S" version encourages spirited driving with 20 inch wheels, 4 wheel steering, strong brakes, and well sorted sport suspension. The car is precise, handles well, you feel as if your driving a car that is 250 kg less then its 1,800 kg weight. The steering is well weighted, with excellent feed back. Power is adequate, VQ engines are fantastic, revving freely to the 7,500 rpm limit. Although in this application it is loud, with an aggressive growl, where a refined swoosh would be required. The 7 speed automatic makes the car feel lively, in manual mode, the shift are fast, precise, and rival a dual clutch transmissions.

Its a phenomenal drivers car with the "S" package, a revelation for a mid size luxury sedan. To paraphrase the commercial. Have you ever driven a car that creates calming breezes, or a car with pure silver dust hand polished into the wood, or the world first blind spot intervention system, or 4 wheel active steering.. of course you haven’t because there has never been a car like the all new Infiniti M.

If you are considering a luxury mid size sedan, you owe it to yourself to experience the "M" and initiate a wonderful intellectual debate on the benefits and virtues of the cars you are considering. The "M" will open new horizons on the benefits that you are seeking.

Compare the new M to existing competitors rather than an evasive ideal, and it stacks up very well for anyone who prioritizes the driving experience over silence and spaciousness.
