Small cars have been around for countless years, usually in other countries, with the exception of a few that have been available here. Its clear that the small car segment is heating up with several new offerings from different manufacturers.
Will the small sedan replace the mid size sedan? Some manufacturers are subscribing to the thought that a "big" small car might just replace a "small" mid size sedan in the near future. Especially as the price of gas seems destined to escalate after an hiatus (perhaps the global economic instability tempered the price escalation).
The Mazda 2 is on the small side of the small car spectrum, which instantly makes it "cute". From our perspective its an appealing, stylish small car that is endearing. Our tester is the Yozoro edition with an additional increment of styling, augmented by the 16 inch alloy wheels, and the substantial rear spoiler, which gives the car a big street presence.
The interior is well finished, with good materials for the price point, with comfortable front seats, while being roomy in the rear seat. Its a long wheelbase design with short overhangs, which enhances the interior "people packaging". Yes...the car is bigger inside than the exterior dimensions visually communicate. The various controls are easy and intuitive, the sound system is good. The instrumentation is cool with the red illumination at night, in addition to having the sport bike style.
The rear hatch with the fold down rear seat, make this car useful, and versatile to accommodate a myriad of errands dealing with small to large items.
Do we have to tell you that navigating parking lots is a breeze.
All the expected safety features are present, from air bags, ABS, brake assist, traction and stability control.
How does it drive?
We were anxious to discover how it drives, being a Mazda, we expected the DNA of fun, crisp handling, communicative steering, precise shifter. We were not disappointed, not only is it cute, its a pleasant responsive car with a sporty aspect that is endearing.
The car handles well considering the torsion beam rear axle, its solid and inspires confidence on rough pavement, the brakes are good, the steering is communicative, the shifter is ideally placed, and precise with short throws.
The performance is acceptable considering the 100 HP that are available, with a reasonable mid range, that alleviates the the need to shift gears simply to have adequate power.
Although one would immediately start comparing cars in this segment. The Mazda 2 has a distinct lively personality, unequivocally communicating its sporty character, its not just another small car to meet a price point.
If you are considering a car in this segment, make it a point to experience the Mazda 2, its bigger than its size, with an immense personality.
