We Told You So...

Last year we were presenting Car2 by Strada as a viable alternative to lower the carbon footprint.

From Autopia.... Go Green--Buy a Used Car.

Usedcars

Ditching your gas guzzler is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, but if you really want to do something about global warming, get a used car. You'll be putting less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

As Matt Power notes in this month's issue of Wired, hybrids get great gas mileage but it takes 113 million BTUs of energy to make a Toyota Prius. Because there are about 113,000 BTUs of energy in a gallon of gasoline, the Prius has consumed the equivalent of 1,000 gallons of gasoline before it reaches the showroom. Think of it as a carbon debt -- one you won't pay off until the Prius has turned over 46,000 miles or so.

There's an easy way to avoid that debt -- buy a used car. The debt has already been paid. But not just any used car will do.

It has to be something fuel efficient. Like, say, a 1998 Toyota Tercel that gets 27 mpg city / 35 mpg highway miles. The Prius will have to go 100,000 miles to achieve the same carbon savings as the 10-year-old Tercel. Get behind the wheel of a 1994 Geo Metro XFi, which matches the Prius' 46 mpg, and the Prius would never close the carbon gap, Power writes.

There are a lot of used cars out there that top 30 mpg, and more than a few that reach into the 40s. Just about any Ford Festiva or Aspire will deliver 33 mpg. The mid-'90s Mazda Proteges are good for 30 mpg or so, as are the Dodge Colts of the early '90s.

Go back a little further and the Honda CRX HF models will give you 39 to 45 mpg in a sporty two-seater that's fun to drive. If you don't mind driving the cheapest of cheap econoboxes, the 1985 Chevrolet Chevette got 36 mpg and the '87 Chevrolet Sprint got 40.

You may laugh, but these cars are becoming big sellers. USA Today says fuel-misers from the early 1990s are selling like crazy and prices have gone up 30 percent in the past few months. A rust-bucket Geo Metro with 175,000 on the odometer recently sold for three grand on eBay.

Of course, it can be tough finding a car that old that hasn't been beaten like a drum, and Robyn Eckard of Kelley Blue Book tells us most used car buyers prefer something no more than 5 to 7 years old and with fewer than 100K on the odometer. No problem.

The auto industry has spent much of the past decade cranking out SUVs, but it has managed to offer a few highly efficient cars as well. The Toyota Echo delivers 30 mpg or better, as does the Honda Civic. The Chevrolet Prizm and Mini Cooper come close. Volkswagen's diesels are good for mileage in the low 30s.

We've undoubtedly left some off the list. But the point is, you don't need to buy a Prius -- or any other hybrid, for that matter -- to get great fuel economy and minimize your carbon footprint. You might feel better driving a hybrid, but you won't necessarily be greener.

Car 2 - The Story

How did Car2 come about?

As usual we enlist the assistance of The Colonel to answer a few questions, and share his thoughts?

Q - Colonel, where did the seed for Car2 originate?

A - To be blunt, we got tired of reliving the past? We got tired of seeing the same ideas redone.

Q - What do you mean by reliving the past?

A - Its simple, the automotive landscape is contantly evolving, and the majority of the players are on the same page doing the same things. Everybody is answering questions that were asked years ago. I really don't want to get into details.

Q - Used cars, conservation, recycling, environment, how is did it start?

A - At Strada we are passionate about what we do, we are passionate about cars in general, and certain makes in particular. We have been in the car business for over 2 generations. We are keenly aware that the ICE / FF (Internal Combustion Engine / Fossil Fuel) combination is in its twilight years. We did a white paper Think...Verde that gives our position on what we believe will power future commuter vehicles. At the same time we are a little frustrated that most of this new technology is still several years in the future.

Q - OK, but how does it relate to used cars?

A - We put our heads together, talking about what could be done NOW! If you read Think...Verde its insightful as to our position. The cars we deal with are in many cases better, have more features than many new cars on the market, its a fact. They are also as expensive as many new cars on the market. Everybody is touting a CPO program or how good their used cars are. We said its all fine and good, but how can a recent model used car make a contribution that goes beyond coming across as a CPO car with a low finance or lease rate?

Q - Contribution?

A - Yes, contribution to conserving our planet? From the perspective of its nice to read and talk about it, NOW lets do something about it with the business that we know.

Q - How can a recent model used car make a contribution?

A - Lets take a look at this: a) you don't have top build it, there saving in resources and energy, pollution and waste b) a recent model has all the technology as the new c) the recent model cars are a substantial saving from a new.

Q - Its still a used car?

A - There are new cars and used cars, new cars have different makes, models, and so on. Used cars, have evolved from Used Cars, to Pre Owned, to Certified Pre Owned, all attempting to give the message that its a good car. Simple question: if someone would be selling defective / tainted products should he be in business? If a grocery store would have to tell you that their food is safe to consume, what would you think?

Q - Colonel, what are you implying?

A - The industry at large is attempting to give the used car an identity that its Certified meaning that its a good car. This is tantamount to saying "we are grocery store xyz and we sell food that has been inspected and certified to make sure that its not tainted". At Strada we are saying that we have gone a few steps beyond telling people that we have good cars, put it this way if we did not have good cars we would not be in business, good cars are an intrinsic part of our business.

FAQ

Q - How did the Car2byStrada initiative start?

A - We grew tired and frustrated of seeing the same ideas and concepts emphasising the past.

Q - What do you mean by the past?

A - The automotive landscape is constantly evolving. The majority of the players are all doing the same things. Everybody is answering the same antiquated questions when it comes to used vehicles.

Q - Used cars, conservation, recycling, environment, how is it related?

A - At Strada we are passionate about what we do, we have been in the car business for over 2 generations. We are keenly aware that the ICE/FF(Internal Combustion Engine / Fossil Fuel) combination is in its twilight years. At the same time we are frustrated that most of the new technology to replace ICE / FF is still several years in the future.

Q - How does it relate to used cars?

A - We put our heads together, asked the question "what can we do now to make a difference" The cars we deal with in many cases are better, have more features, are safer than many new cars in the market. Most used cars are presented as a different flavour of Certified Pre Owned, accompanied by a low finance or lease rate. We wanted to go beyond the CPO programs, and make a contribution.

Q - What sort of contribution?

A - A contribution to preserving our environment, and a sustainable process to conserve energy and resources. We are constantly reading, hearing that our environment is being inexorably altered. We are doing something about it with the business that we know.

Q - How can a recent model used car make a contribution?

A - There is no need to manufacture a used car, it was done a few years ago. Consequently there is an appreciable saving of resources, energy, pollution, waste, which in turn protects our environment. We list the fuel economy ratings by Transport Canada, and more important for the environment the CO2 emissions. Used cars offer a saving to the customer.

Q - Skeptics might say that its still a used car.

A - Or we can say that its a new car being recycled into a 2nd life. That is the reason we call it Car2, the 2 is for the second life of the car. It makes a contribution to conserve the environment, and saves the customer money. Its an elegant WIN / WIN.

Q - What about all the Certified Pre Owned programs that instill peace of mind.

A - From our perspective this is dealing with the past. At Strada we are several steps beyond telling people that we have good cars. If we did not have good cars we would not be in business. Good cars that offer value and peace of mind are a cornerstone of our business.

Q - You are saying that inspected and reconditioned cars with a warranty are a cornerstone of how Strada offers value and peace of mind to all the customers.

A - Precisely, its a standard feature of all the cars we offer for sale. Our blog clearly describes our philosophy and position.

Q - Are you saying there is more meaning to a used car?

A - If you get a Car2byStrada you absolutely do not have to be concerned about the goodness of the car, and your peace of mind. We have done all of the due diligence in that regard. If its your intention to minimise harm to our planet, then a Car2byStrada is a compelling way of doing it.
