Special Cars

The other day we were reading a few articles about enthusiasts acquiring special cars in one fashion or another. These cars become projects, and often require various levels of work.

Then it crossed our minds that some things change while not changing at all. Yes...the times change, the technology changes, but it also does not change after decades.

Several years ago we embarked on a first car dialogue and several folks contributed. This was The Colonel's first car...click. Agreed, a 1963 Chevrolet is over 50 years old today.

When you are young for some reason time moves slower, there is an abundance of physical energy and resources, with usually a scarcity of financial resources. Technology was non existent, everything was mechanical.

As an enthusiast you absolutely had to acquire an innate understanding of cars, how they worked, how to fix them usually on a tight budget. There was no Internet, no forums to exchange information, or acquire information.

Every car was special, and its interesting to see that special cars still exist today.

What was/is a special car?

Its usually a car that requires a fair amount of TLC, or has some sort of potential after a bunch of work is invested in the car. Work more than money.

Agreed...it was special in the eyes of the beholder and perhaps the immediate friends. Everyone else might conclude that it was a miserable POS.

Interesting enough that special car thing stays with you through the years, and the more cars you own, see, drive, deal with...the more some cars are special. Its not necessarily that its a good car, or a fast car, its just a special car.

Lets look at some special cars...from the past

1963 Chevrolet Biscayne Coupe - it was special, priceless in its own way. Required a ton of constant TLC to keep it running.

1979 Camaro Z28 - still very special, still in the garage, how to have your own collectible. Back in the day a ton of work went on that car.

The other thing that makes cars special is that if you own them for long enough they become a part of the family. The Z28 has been around for 38 years.

Lets not forget that mechanical cars are special in their own way. When you need a key to unlock a door, to start a car, in 2016 its special.

Lets not forget a 1995 C220 that has been around Strada for over 11 years, a priceless car in its own way.

If you are an enthusiast most if not all the cars you own, and will own always have something special that resonates with you...they are rarely just a car.

1963 Corvette Gran Sport

Reading in Super Chevy the story of the Corvette Gran Sport from the days of Zora Arkus Duntov. Only 5 were built with presumably parts that were lying around.

Not a big deal another story about a 50+ year old Corvette, and Duntov's efforts to get into big time racing,  and the strong desire of GM upper management to stay out of racing.

An interesting, and fascinating story told the first time in Super Chevy a few months earlier...click.

This last time The Colonel's memory bank gets a blip, connects a few dots "I saw one of those cars at St.jovite / Mt.Temblant back in the day". The Colonel remembers perusing over the car in the pits, and obvious watching it race.

It was owned by Greenblatt, and probably sponsored by Duval a prominent Chevrolet dealer in Montreal back then, had a 427 (big block) not a 327 (actually a 377 small block). Why is there a 427 in the car?  The car was driven by Jacques Couture, it was 1965. Who knew that it was a 427, back in 1965 it was a big block, a 396 since 427's were a few years away.

When The Colonel saw the car in 1965 it was in "configuration #5".

You can just imagine The Colonel being the consummate Chevrolet fan, knew about Gran Sport Corvettes, the aluminum small block, cross draft Webers. How did Duval get to own this car? How did a big block land in the car? Back then not easy to quickly trace the history of a car.

Its a Gran Sport lets watch it race...enjoy the sound emanating from a big block with side pipes.

It was serial number 004, today its in the Colliers Collection in Naples, Florida. Take a look...click.

In 1965 we read print publications and gathered news with a time delay, had to attend events (races) in person. If you lived in Montreal St.Jovite / Mt.Tremblant was the road course, and Napierville was the drag strip.

At a time when smart devices were a figment of the imagination, its fascinating that the human brain has an expansive storage capacity. There is no structured search feature in the brain, memory bank, and when something triggers a memory, it also connects dots.

In 2016 technology kicks in, the simple "I remember seeing that car at St.Jovite" quickly lets you connect dots, uncovers photos, that it was #004, the restoration, and its in the Colliers Collection.

We are all pressed for time, we all absorb a ton of stuff on a daily basis. When you connect a few dots, take a moment and follow through. You might be surprised at what will develop, and what you can learn.

Solid vs Hydraulic Lifters

Been around cars for a while, at one time or another perhaps you entertained the thought of a solid lifter camshaft in the engine of your car.

The Colonel a few years, or is it decades did not just entertain, he did it. In the video you will hear that a solid lifter camshaft is "manly" and requires additional maintenance.

The quest is to have a high strung engine, that will rev higher, generate more top end power, and perhaps sacrifice some low end torque. Its a 454 torque is not an issue. Back in the day it was a small block Chevy and low end torque was appreciably sacrificed.

With solid lifters you get awesome top end, the aggressive solid lifter sound, and the increased maintenance of adjusting valve lash on a regular basis.

David Freiburger provides a comprehensive explanation of the differences between solid and hydraulic lifters and camshafts profiles.

Yes...for daily street use below 6,000 RPM hydraulic lifters are the way to go.

Ported Heads

From way back in the day, "ported" was the cool cylinder head set up, and most probably every aspiting gear head at one time or another tried to port a set of heads in one fashion or another. 

If you did try to port a set of heads...care to tell us about it.
